Norm Internalization

External rules become felt preferences and moral intuitions; you no longer notice the rule, only the feeling — and once internalised, you tend to broadcast it as an expectation for others.

An everyday example

Feeling that a certain tip, gift or brand is simply 'right', with no memory of learning it.

What it can cost you

Mistaking learned rules for your own values; enforcing on others what was installed in you.

Warning signs

  • I cannot explain why it feels wrong.
  • I expect others to follow rules I never chose.

One thing to do

When something feels simply right, ask where you learned it and whether you would choose it fresh; keep what survives.
