High-Context vs. Low-Context

In high-context cultures meaning lives in relationship, setting and the unsaid; in low-context ones, in explicit words and documents. Each reads the other as evasive or rude, and contracts mean different things.

An everyday example

A 'yes' that meant 'I heard you'; a detailed contract read as an insult to the relationship.

What it can cost you

Misreading agreement, refusal and commitment; a counterpart exploiting the gap between what was said and what was meant.

Warning signs

  • Their yes did not mean yes.
  • My document offended them.

One thing to do

Confirm understanding in both modes: state it explicitly and check it relationally; put the essentials in writing without making writing the whole relationship.
