Cultural Identity Threat

When a group identity feels threatened, people move toward protective and oppositional choices and may act out stereotypes of their own group; threat is easy to trigger and reliably changes behaviour.

An everyday example

A market rallying to a local brand after a perceived foreign slight; a person conforming to a stereotype they were just reminded of.

What it can cost you

Being steered by manufactured threat; performing a stereotype under pressure; misreading defensive choices as preferences.

Warning signs

  • I bought it to make a point.
  • I acted the way they expected.

One thing to do

Notice when a choice is a defence; ask who benefits from the threat you feel; choose from security, not siege.
