Cultural Appropriation Anxiety

Groups feel ownership of their symbols; borrowing without credit, context or consent — especially by the more powerful — is read as theft, while groups also reclaim symbols once used against them.

An everyday example

A fashion line using sacred designs as pattern; a slur reclaimed by the community it targeted.

What it can cost you

Causing offence and backlash by borrowing carelessly; or paralysis that treats all exchange as theft.

Warning signs

  • We borrowed it because it looked good.
  • Nobody from that group was involved.

One thing to do

Ask who owns the symbol, what it means to them, whether they are credited and benefiting, and whether the power relation makes it exploitation.
