Alarm Exhaustion (Selye)

Selye's third stage: after prolonged alarm and resistance, reserves run out; the person stops responding to stressors at all, which looks like calm and is collapse.

An everyday example

A team that has fought fires for a year stops escalating problems, not because there are none but because nobody has anything left.

What it can cost you

Reading exhaustion as acceptance; making decisions from depletion.

Warning signs

  • Nobody objects to anything anymore.
  • I do not care which option wins.

One thing to do

When responses go flat after a long siege, assume exhaustion, not agreement; recover before deciding anything.
