Subcultural Capital
Inside a scene, status comes from knowing — the vocabulary, the references, the coded slang that evades outsiders and algorithms; participation earns it, and it is worthless outside the scene.
An everyday example
Using the right slang to be taken seriously in a community; algospeak to discuss what filters would block.
What it can cost you
Being excluded or gatekept by codes; over-investing in status that does not travel; misreading a scene from outside.
Warning signs
- I am being tested on vocabulary.
- My status here means nothing elsewhere.
One thing to do
Learn scenes that matter to you by participating, not studying; do not confuse scene status with the world's.
