Habit Stacking
Attaching a new behaviour to an existing automatic routine gives it a reliable cue; the mechanism is the implementation intention — 'after X, I do Y' — which reliably raises follow-through.
An everyday example
Checking the cash position right after the first coffee each morning turns a monthly panic into a daily glance.
What it can cost you
Stacking onto an unstable anchor, or stacking too much and collapsing the routine.
Warning signs
- I rely on remembering rather than on a cue.
- My new habit has no fixed place in the day.
One thing to do
One new behaviour per anchor; the anchor must already happen daily without thought.
