Fear Appeal (Protection Motivation)

Messages that raise perceived threat to drive action; they work — especially when paired with a clear, doable response — and rarely backfire, which makes them the most reliable persuasion lever and the most abused.

An everyday example

'Hackers target small businesses like yours every 39 seconds' followed by a one-click security bundle.

What it can cost you

Buying protection sized to the fear rather than the risk; paralysis or denial when the fear comes without a response.

Warning signs

  • I want the solution to make the feeling go away.
  • I have not checked the base rate.

One thing to do

Separate the two claims: how likely and how bad is the threat, really, and is the offered response the best one? Price both independently.
