Pragmatism

Judge a belief or plan by what difference it makes in practice; if two views lead to the same actions, the dispute is idle, and if a view leads to no action it is not yet a decision.

An everyday example

Ending a two-hour strategy debate by asking what each side would do differently on Monday.

What it can cost you

Debating distinctions that change nothing; or pragmatism as an excuse to ignore truth when it is inconvenient.

Warning signs

  • We have been arguing and nothing depends on it.
  • 'Practical' is being used to dodge a fact.

One thing to do

For any disagreement, ask what each position implies concretely; decide that.
