False Dilemma Construction

Presenting two options as the only options — usually one unacceptable and one the persuader wants — when the real option space is wider; the frame hides the alternatives that would have won.

An everyday example

'Either we sign the three-year deal today or we lose the discount forever.'

What it can cost you

Choosing the less bad of two manufactured options; never seeing the third.

Warning signs

  • The choice is A or B and B is terrible.
  • Nobody mentioned doing nothing or doing part.

One thing to do

Whenever there are exactly two options, generate three more before deciding; ask who benefits from there being only two.
