Determinism vs. Agency

Whether choices are caused or free is unresolved; what matters is that believing you have no agency measurably reduces effort and ethics, and manipulators sell both fatalism and false omnipotence.

An everyday example

'Given your situation, there is really only one choice' — the counterpart's determinism, applied to you.

What it can cost you

Fatalism that surrenders decisions; or grandiosity that ignores constraints. Both are exploitable.

Warning signs

  • I feel I have no options.
  • Someone is telling me my choice is already made.

One thing to do

Treat agency as a working assumption: list what is within your control and act on that list, whatever the metaphysics.
