Concession Reciprocation Pressure

A large, showy concession on something that cost them nothing — or a fake demand dropped at the right moment — obligates you to concede on something real; the reciprocity is genuine, the concession was not.

An everyday example

'We'll waive the onboarding fee' (never charged to anyone) followed by 'so can you commit to three years?'

What it can cost you

Trading real value for theatre; reciprocating a concession that was manufactured to be conceded.

Warning signs

  • I feel I owe them for something that cost nothing.
  • The demand they dropped was never serious.

One thing to do

Value every concession at what it costs them, not what it is called; reciprocate only for real cost, and in proportion.
