Absurdism (Camus)

The demand for meaning meets a world that does not supply it; Camus's answer is to act with lucidity, freedom and passion anyway. Meaninglessness is no reason for paralysis, nor for grabbing the first meaning on offer.

An everyday example

Choosing a career path fully knowing no path is cosmically 'right', and committing to it rather than waiting for certainty.

What it can cost you

Paralysis waiting for a meaning that will not arrive; or buying meaning from whoever sells it — movements, gurus, brands.

Warning signs

  • I am waiting to feel certain before I commit.
  • Someone is offering to tell me my purpose.

One thing to do

Choose your commitments consciously and hold them as chosen, not discovered; be suspicious of anyone who offers to supply your purpose.
